Playing Nurse Rachet: Take Your Pills

Every day, twice a day, I dole out meds of different types to two children.

I have their meds in a large Ziploc bag labeled with each child's name. I had become so confused trying to keep track of who was on what and why and what time each drug should be given.

The Ziploc bag method has helped significantly. At breakfast and dinner I set the bags on the table and the children are learning to read the labels and set out the appropriate medication for the time of day.

For the longest time my aggressive child was faking me out and not swallowing. Well, that stopped when he had his blood drawn and there was no medication in his system. I was shocked!
I told the doctor, "But I stand and watch as he swallows." She told me children are very good at cheeking medication. Or pretending to put it in their mouth while it remains in the other hand.

When confronted this child still denied it! I said, "oh well, no worries, now you will have another blood draw in three week". He was very angry. I explained, "I guess next time you will think twice about throwing your medicine away".

A year ago I thought my life had come to an end. The life of enjoying my children. There was a point I was seriously thinking I needed to put them in foster care. I felt like a failure as a mother.I had bought every parenting book, tried every method with no success. Where did my wonderful kids go? Age 1 through 9 was awesome!

Turns out they have mood disorders that totally turn a home inside out and upside down.

I can't believe it has been a year since then. We have had a good week! I am beginning to see the light!
