Where are the specialists?

Once my children were diagnosed I asked their psychiatrist if counseling was appropriate. Her answer was, "not until they are medically stable".

Well, that took about a year.

Once we reached this milestone I asked for the names of the child therapists at the childrens' hospital outpatient clinic.

"Oh we only have one and she is booked out about a year," replies the kids' doctor.

I was so disappointed. Already overwhelmed, yet pleased my children are in the care of the best child psychiatrist at our childrens' hospital.

I am given a list. I start making calls. Who accepts my insurance? Who specializes in pediatric mood disorders? Will they accept insurance only? I spent all my financial resources the year they were in and out of the hospital.

So after awhile we stopped going to therapy because our therapist wouldn't provide service without the copay.

I still go to therapy weekly, it is the only way I can keep my sanity. My therapist foregoes the copay.

Now I have started a fundraiser at a site called connecttocharity.com in hopes of improving and expanding services for this important specialty. Check it out and type Young Minds Matter in the search line and underneath click fundraiser. No donation is too small. I gave the smallest donation because I am financially depleted from medical costs that are never ending.

Right now my aggressive child is repeatedly asking me the same question, which I have already answered twenty times! So I must go for now.....til next time.
